Just walked past looks like they are having the finishing touches done. The contractor said it opens on 24th. Looked inside from Greet Street and the layout looks the same in the bar ghat side.

joyo - Good one. I use to OWN the area near the pool table in The Duke, back when.

Re: The Boleyn Pub
Was there any beer chucking before that Green Street Hobbit film?

Usually PoW or Charlenes/JR’s or maybe Queens. Only occasionally The Boleyn. It’s a beautiful pub, though, the building and some of the decor, and will surely be very nice now it’s been restored, but probably going to be hipster clientele and prices.

I’ll probably pop in there next time I get to a match, check it out.

I think it was listed so would have been difficult and more expensive to redevelop to other uses and probably wouldn't have been granted listed building consent. Mind you £1.5m is not shabby, looks like they did a good job so they deserve to do well, I'm not convinced the locals will use it, shame probably end up as a mosque in a few years.

Last time I went in there was in the late 70s early 80s, decent being so close to the South Bank entrance, it wasn't seen as cricket to chuck your beer about in there back then. Preferred it to the Queens which was a dive, but not the Prince of Wales.

The Village in the 90s/early 00’s
Coach and Horses mid 00s for a few years til it closed
EHWMC after that

Then Boleyn for a while
Then M&Ms…

…then after three years

Used to mainly use the Stanley or the Vic

Having lived in the area I have had good nights at all those pubs and wine bars over the years!

I used to like the Castle pub opposite green gate, lager in the Central was always watered down

If I ever to to a game again, I think I’ll go to the Boleyn for a few pre-match sherbets and see how it is.

Re: The Boleyn Pub
I couldn’t handle cueing for the tube and the Boleyn was my first stop after a game. Preferred cueing for a pint and I liked the after game feeling there.
It was that or if I wasn’t in the mood, I’d just walk to Plaistow have a few in the Black Lion and then nip onto the tube.

Re: The Boleyn Pub
When I lived in Ballsall Heath in Birmingham, a substantial Pakistani minority had replaced a substantial Irish one over the past 20-30 years.

A few pubs were still limping on, supported by ex-residents coming back.

Fuck knows why, they were all shit pubs. Especially their beer, the primary reason to go to a pub in my view.

I was The Duke, Queens (downstairs) Charlenes, POW afterwards. Sometimes the Denmark after a game. Rarely The Boleyn, Wakefield, Central.

Glad to see that fantastic glass ceiling has been retained and restored. Apart from that it was pretty ordinary and the matchday clientele a little immature for my old git taste.
